Why Ever Did We Do This ?

You know... we're still not quite sure!  We thought we knew when we started but as the trip grew longer the reasons kept changing.  I guess I make no sense, but as we thought about it, neither did our reasons.  I'll try to explain.

Picture this.  Two people sitting on the coast of Oregon renting a kitchenette motel room by the week.  Three fourths of a job between us.  Not a care in the world other than everyone elses, financial.

But we weren't complaining!  We were making it just like everyone else, maybe even better as we had no debt.  No car payments, no house payments, none of the day to day worries of others besides dinner and next weeks rent, which we somehow always managed to scrape up.

Still as happy as we were, we had this urge to do something.  Neither of us were, nor are we now, money oriented, but the thoughts of "makin' it big", had crossed our mind.  Not to get rich, but to enable us to do that something we couldn't yet define.  We thought, "hey, let's get good jobs (we are both highly skilled and intelligent, just not motivated), make some bucks for awhile and travel the world!  Go to Europe and see the sights!"

Then came September 11th 2001.

The world melted, swirled and reshaped itself before our eyes.  No longer was it a matter of what should we do for kicks, now we knew every second of our lives, every we choice we made, must forever more have meaning and substance.
